What is Krishna Janmashtami?
Krishna Janmashtami marks the happening of Bhagavan Sri Krishna, the eighth incarnation of Maha Vishnu, born at midnight on the Ashtami tithi of the waning moon in the month of Bhadrapada, in a prison cell in Mathura.
It is not merely the remembrance of a birth. It is the celebration of the moment the Divine chose to descend into human form to re-establish Dharma, exactly as Krishna Himself declares in the Bhagavad Gita: whenever Dharma declines and adharma rises, He manifests, age after age.
Across KAILASA the day is kept with fasting, abhishekam, the swinging of the divine child, mountains of naivedhya and unbroken song, until the sacred midnight hour of His appearance.
Who is Krishna?
Krishna is the complete Avatar, the Purna Avatara. Cowherd and king, child and cosmic teacher, the butter-thief of Vrindavan and the charioteer of Kurukshetra.
He is Navaneeta Chora, who steals butter and hearts alike. He is Govardhanadhari, who lifted a mountain on one finger to shelter His people. He is Murali Manohara, whose flute calls every being back to its source. And He is the Jagadguru of the Bhagavad Gita, who taught Arjuna the science of living enlightenment in the middle of a battlefield.
In Krishna the highest Vedantic truth and the sweetest human intimacy meet without contradiction. He is at once the Ultimate and the utterly accessible - leela and Brahman in a single form.
