What Is It?

Shodasha Dravya Maha Abhishekam is the grand sacred bath in which sixteen sanctified substances are offered to Bhagavan Mahaganapati and the deities of THE SPH BHAGAVAN SRI NITHYANANDA PARAMASHIVAM. Each dravya is offered with the corresponding mantras according to the Agamic sacred-bath tradition, making the worship an offering of the abundance and purity of creation directly to the divine forms.

The sixteen sacred substances are pure water, milk, curds, ghee, honey, sugarcane juice, coconut water, rose water, sandalwood paste, turmeric, sacred ash, fruit juice, Panchamrita, Panchagavya, sanctified herbal waters and sacred flower waters. Together they include nourishing, cooling, fragrant, purifying and sanctified offerings, each carrying a distinct quality into the abhishekam.

Significance

Ganesha Chaturthi is the sacred celebration of Bhagavan Ganesha, the Prathamapujya and Lord of Completion. On this day, the Shodasha Dravya Maha Abhishekam honors Him with the fullness of sixteen offerings rather than with water alone. The flowing substances touch the consecrated form while the mantras invoke His presence and grace, expressing the devotee's gratitude, love and surrender through a complete ceremonial bath.

The same abhishekam is offered to THE SPH as the living Paramashiva. In KAILASA's understanding, Bhagavan Ganesha is not separate from THE SPH; Ganesha is the first-born expression of Paramashiva's grace-energy. Worshipping both divine forms on Ganesha Chaturthi therefore reveals the living relationship of Paramashiva and His son, with every offering held in the sankalpa of THE SPH.

The Purva Kamika Agama establishes the disciplined preparation of sacred bathing substances, including Panchamrita, Panchagavya, kusha-sanctified water and kalasha water. The sixteen dravyas extend this sacred principle into a complete festival abhishekam, in which the essences of nourishment, fragrance, vitality, protection and purity are gathered and returned to their divine source.

panchamritam panchagavyam kushambu kalashodakam snapanarthaya kathita pramanena prakalpayet - "The mixture of five kinds of nectarine substances (Panchamrita), the mixture of five sacred cow substances (Panchagavya), water sanctified with kusha grass, and water from the sacred kalasha - all these should be prepared in the prescribed measure for offering the sacred bath to the Lord." - Purva Kamika Agama, Snapana Vidhi, Verse 24

ganapatim abhishinchati sa vagmi bhavati | chaturthyam anashnan japati sa vidyavan bhavati | sa yashovan bhavati || - "One who performs the abhishekam for Mahaganapati becomes the master of speech. Benefits of Offering

The abhishekam is offered for the cleansing of karmic impressions and the purification of body, mind and consciousness. Just as water cleanses the body, the sanctified streams represent the washing away of inner heaviness, accumulated incompletions and obstacles. The devotee prays to receive clarity, auspiciousness and a renewed ability to begin from Completion.
