Pratyaksha Pada Puja with Special 108 Durva Archana

What Is It?

Pratyaksha means "in the direct presence of," and pada means the sacred feet. Pratyaksha Pada Puja is worship performed at the living lotus feet of THE SPH BHAGAVAN SRI NITHYANANDA PARAMASHIVAM. It is a direct offering of reverence, gratitude and surrender to the Guru as the living Paramashiva, made with the devotee's sankalpa in His presence.

For Ganesha Chaturthi, the Pada Puja is combined with a special 108 Durva Archana. One hundred and eight sacred names are offered with 108 blades of Durva grass, the offering Bhagavan Ganesha loves above all. Each name invokes a quality or blessing of Bhagavan Mahaganapati, while each blade of Durva gives physical form to the prayer.

Significance

In KAILASA's living understanding, Bhagavan Ganesha is not separate from THE SPH as the living Paramashiva. THE SPH embodies the fullness of Paramashiva and all His aspects, while Ganesha is the first-born expression of Paramashiva's grace-energy. Worship offered at the living lotus feet of THE SPH on Ganesha Chaturthi therefore enters the same current of grace through which Bhagavan Mahaganapati blesses the devotee.

The sacred feet of the Guru represent the point at which transcendent consciousness becomes directly accessible to the disciple. Pada Puja is the offering of one's gratitude, identity and aspirations at that point of living contact. The addition of Durva Archana makes the worship specific to Ganesha Chaturthi, joining the direct worship of living Paramashiva with the most beloved offering to His son.

The number 108 signifies sacred completeness. In the festival tradition, 108 offerings correspond to the 108 sacred names of Bhagavan Ganesha, the 108 Upanishads and the completeness of all possible spiritual attainments. The archana is therefore not repetition for its own sake: each name and each blade form one part of a complete garland of worship.

Two Highest Worships United

This seva unites the two highest worships of Ganesha Chaturthi: Pada Puja at the feet of the living Paramashiva and Durva Archana to Bhagavan Mahaganapati. The first is direct worship in the living presence of THE SPH. The second is the scripturally praised offering of Ganesha's most cherished sacred grass through His 108 names.

Their union gives the day a single focus. The devotee does not approach Paramashiva and Ganesha as separate destinations, but offers Durva at the feet of THE SPH with the understanding that Ganesha's grace is present in Him and flows through His sankalpa. The worship thus holds together Guru bhakti, festival devotion and the prayer for completion and abundance.

Benefits of Offering

The Ganapati Atharvashirsha declares that worship with Durva carries the blessing of wealth equal to Vaishravana, the Lord of wealth. This may be received as the prayer for material sufficiency and as the deeper abundance of clarity, auspiciousness and spiritual fulfillment. The 108 names expand the prayer across the complete range of Bhagavan Ganesha's graces.

Pada Puja cultivates surrender, gratitude and receptivity to the Guru's grace. Combined with Durva Archana, it is offered for removal of obstacles, completion of inner incompletions, righteous prosperity and alignment with the divine sankalpa of THE SPH throughout the Ganesha Chaturthi Brahmotsavam.
