What Is It?

Dhvajarohanam is the ceremonial hoisting of the festival flag upon the Dhvajastambha, the sacred flagstaff of the temple. It formally inaugurates a Brahmotsavam and marks the moment when the temple enters the full field of festival worship. For KAILASA's Ganesha Chaturthi Brahmotsavam, the flag bears the Mushaka, the vahana of Bhagavan Mahaganapati.

The rite is performed through the prescribed temple worship, sankalpa, mantra and offerings before the flag is raised. Once it ascends the Dhvajastambha, the festival is no longer only approaching or being prepared: it has begun. The flag remains the visible sign that the Brahmotsavam is living and active until the concluding rites and its ceremonial lowering.

Significance

In the Agamic understanding, Dhvajarohanam is a cosmic invitation. The raised flag announces the Brahmotsavam to Paramashiva and the entire divine assembly of thirty-three crore devas across the fourteen lokas, inviting them to descend and be present for the celebration. The Dhvajastambha thus stands as a sacred axis joining the temple field with all planes of existence.

KAILASA celebrates Ganesha Chaturthi as a Brahmotsavam, the highest category of festival worship described in the Agamas. During this sacred period, Paramashiva and the divine assembly are invoked to accept the worship and devotion of human beings. Every abhishekam, alankaram, naivedya, archana, homa and procession unfolds within the field opened by Dhvajarohanam.

The Mushaka upon the flag identifies this festival as the celebration of Bhagavan Mahaganapati. His vahana expresses the subtle and persistent intelligence that can enter where larger forces cannot and penetrate even the most immovable obstacle. Raised above the temple, it proclaims the presence of the Lord of beginnings and the Remover of obstacles throughout the festival.

Sponsoring the Dhvajarohanam places the devotee's sankalpa at the opening of the entire Brahmotsavam. Because this rite formally begins the festival field, that prayer is carried from the first invocation into every offering made across all its days.
