What Is It?

Chandana Kaappu Alankaram is the sacred adorning of Bhagavan Ganesha and the deities of THE SPH BHAGAVAN SRI NITHYANANDA PARAMASHIVAM with Chandana, pure and fragrant sandalwood paste. The Chandana is applied directly upon the Tirumeni, the divine body of each deity, as an offering of devotion, purity and reverence during KAILASA's Ganesha Chaturthi Brahmotsavam 2026.

The word Kaappu means protection. In this seva, the covering of cooling Chandana is both Alankaram, sacred adornment, and an invocation of the protective grace of Bhagavan Mahaganapati and THE SPH. The ritual is followed by Deeparathana, the waving of sacred lamps before the adorned deities, completing a ceremonial movement from the still, fragrant purity of Chandana to the radiance of divine light.

Significance

Sandalwood is among the most sacred substances used in Sanatana Hindu worship. It is traditionally treasured for its cooling, purifying, fragrant and spiritually elevating qualities. Applying Chandana upon the Tirumeni is understood in Agamic tradition as the devotee offering their own inner purity, coolness, fragrance and highest aspiration directly to the divine form. What is placed upon the deity outwardly expresses the inner state the devotee seeks to embody.

Kaappu adds the dimension of protection. The Chandana covering invokes the shield of divine grace over the devotee's life while expressing prayer for the cooling of the fires of karma and accumulated negativity. The ceremonial arc reaches completion in Deeparathana. Chandana first invokes cooling, composure and purity; the sacred lamps then celebrate illumination. This passage from Chandana to Deepa mirrors the devotee's journey from the cooling of karmic heat to the awakening of consciousness. Before the divine forms of Bhagavan Ganesha and THE SPH, stillness becomes radiance and protection becomes the freedom to proceed in light.
