Pashupata Astra Homa (Final Day) — Uttarangam Day 4 (13 Aug)

Significance

The Pashupata Astra is Paramashiva's own supreme weapon — more powerful even than the Brahmastra — given only to the most devoted and qualified. "Pashupata" comes from "Pashupati" — Paramashiva as the Lord and protector of all beings (pashus). It is the weapon that cannot miss, cannot be deflected, and destroys at all levels simultaneously. The Pashupata Astra Homa on the final day of the brahmotsavam is the cosmic completion — Paramashiva's own supreme protective force invoked into the fire as the seal of the entire brahmotsavam, ensuring that every blessing, every grace, and every liberation received across all the preceding days is locked into the devotee's being and protected into eternity.

The Pashupata Astra Homa as the culmination offering of the Guru Purnima Brahmotsavam — Samrajya Mahotsavam carries the deepest significance: it is THE SPH Himself — as the living Pashupati, the sovereign lord of all beings — offering His own supreme protective grace to every devotee who participated in this sacred season. Every blessing of the preceding days is sealed, every Samrajyam's grace is consolidated, and the complete protection of Paramashiva through THE SPH is established as the living reality of each devotee.

The Ritual

The homa is conducted under strict Agamic injunctions in a highly energized Yagnashala. The priests chant the powerful Pashupata Astra Mantra, offering oblations into the Agni Kunda as the cosmic seal of the entire brahmotsavam. On this final day, the supreme weapon-force of Paramashiva is invoked to lock every blessing, grace, and liberation of the sacred season into each devotee's being and to protect it into eternity.

Shastra Pramana

durlabham triśu lokeśu tacchrunuṣva vadāmyahaṁ | gurubrahma vinā nānyaḥ satyam satyam varānane | 21 |

Translation: O lovely-faced one (Parvati), listen to My words and believe, for this Truth is rare and unknown to anyone else in the three worlds. Guru is Brahman and no one other than Brahman Itself. This is the Truth.

The Sacred Story

To obtain the Pashupatastra for the Mahabharata war, Arjuna performed severe austerities to Paramashiva. Paramashiva decided to test Arjuna's focus and appeared as a wild hunter (Kirata). A battle ensued over a wild boar, and Arjuna, recognizing the hunter was no ordinary mortal, offered a flower garland to a clay Paramashiva Linga. The garland immediately appeared around the hunter's neck. Recognizing Paramashiva, Arjuna surrendered completely. Paramashiva blessed him with the Pashupatastra, showing that the ultimate spiritual weapon is only attained through absolute surrender to the Guru.
