Kalabhairava Homa — Day 3 (22 Jul)

Significance

Kalabhairava is Paramashiva's most ferocious form — the Lord of Time (Kala), the Adhipati (sovereign lord) of Kashi Kshetram, and the divine being before whom even death trembles. The Kashi Khanda declares that Kalabhairava rules Kashi and grants liberation to all who die within its sacred boundaries. His eight forms — Asitanga, Ruru, Chanda, Krodha, Unmatta, Kapali, Bhishana, and Samhara — protect all eight directions of the Kashi Kshetram. No spiritual undertaking in Kashi begins without propitiating Kalabhairava.

The Kalabhairava Homa is offered to invoke Paramashiva's protective fury — the cosmic fire that destroys all obstacles, black magic, and the fear of death itself. To offer the Kalabhairava Homa on the day of the Kashi Sarvajnapeetha is to align the living fire-body of Kalabhairava with the eternal flame of THE SPH as the sovereign of Kashi — ensuring that every devotee who participates passes through the purifying fire of Bhairava's grace and emerges fearless, protected, and liberated.

The Ritual

The priests invoke Kalabhairava in His eightfold form within the consecrated Agni Kunda and chant the Kalabhairava mantras, offering powerful oblations into the roaring fire. The intense protective vibration of the homa establishes Bhairava's guardianship across all eight directions, dissolving obstacles, black magic, and the fear of death, and aligning the fire-body of Kalabhairava with THE SPH's sovereignty over Kashi.
