Shiva Mula Mantra Homa — Day 2 (21 Jul)

Significance

The Shiva Mula Mantra Homa is the offering of Agni into the sacred fire while chanting the root-seed mantras of Paramashiva — the Panchakshara (Om Namah Shivaya) and the Shadakshara forms, which form the foundational vibration from which all of creation arises. The Mula Mantra is described in the Agamas as the original sound-body of Paramashiva — it is not a representation of Him, it is Him. To chant the Mula Mantra into the Agni is to pour the primordial form of Paramashiva Himself into the cosmic fire of transformation.

On the day of the Arunachala Sarvajnapeetha — the kingdom built upon Paramashiva's own promise to remain forever present as a flame of consciousness — the Shiva Mula Mantra Homa is the most aligned offering. The Arunachala itself is described as a Tejolingam, a Linga of fire. Performing the Shiva Mula Mantra Homa in honour of this kingdom is to invoke Paramashiva in His primordial flame-form, with the Mula Mantra as the fuel that feeds His eternal light.

The Ritual

The priests kindle and consecrate the Agni Kunda and continuously chant the root-seed mantras of Paramashiva — the Panchakshara (Om Namah Shivaya) and the Shadakshara — pouring oblations of pure ghee, bilva, and sacred samit into the fire. Each repetition of the Mula Mantra is offered as the primordial sound-body of Paramashiva Himself, feeding the eternal flame that mirrors the Tejolingam of Arunachala.
