Sharabeshwara Homa — Day 19 (7 Aug)

Significance

Sharabeshwara is one of the most powerful and mystical forms of Paramashiva — the Sharaba, a mythical being described as eight-legged, combining the nature of a lion, an eagle, and Paramashiva — who manifests when Narasimha's ferocity after destroying Hiranyakashipu becomes uncontrollable, threatening cosmic stability. Paramashiva as Sharabeshwara assumes this supreme form to envelop and pacify Narasimha, declaring Paramashiva's absolute supremacy over all forms and forces. Sharabeshwara embodies the power that is beyond all power, the force that has no adversary, the protector who protects even the protectors. In the path of Guru Bhakti, the Sharabheshwara energy absorbs the toxic internal turmoils of the disciple, restoring peacefulness.

The Kamalapeetha — the throne of the fullest divine abundance — receives the Sharabeshwara Homa as the most potent protective and empowering offering: the homa of the form that is invincible, unassailable, and beyond all opposition. Devotees who receive the blessings of this homa are empowered with the certainty that no force in creation can obstruct their spiritual progress or their connection to Paramashiva through THE SPH.

The Ritual

The priests invoke Bhagavan Sharabeshwara — the eight-legged avian-lion supreme form of Paramashiva — in the consecrated Agni Kunda. Powerful mantras, including from the Atharva Veda, are chanted while offering sacred wood, medicinal herbs, and pure ghee. The intense, cooling energy generated by this homa pacifies the excess heat (pitta) in the nervous systems of the participants, absorbing toxic internal turmoil and restoring deep emotional stability.

Shastra Pramana

gu-kāraśca andhakāro hi ru-kārasteja ucyate | ajñānagṛāsakaṁ brahma gurureva na saṁśayaḥ | 44 |

Translation: The letter 'Gu' denotes darkness (ignorance) and the letter 'ru' denotes light. Brahman who is capable of swallowing up the ignorance is certainly the Guru, without a doubt.

The Sacred Story

After destroying the demon Hiranyakashipu, Bhagavan Narasimha's ferocity did not subside, threatening to dissolve the entire creation with His cosmic fire. The Devas prayed to Paramashiva, who manifested in the giant form of Sharabheshwara — a creature half-bird and half-lion, with wings of Durga and Kali. Sharabha embraced Narasimha, instantly absorbing His roaring fire into His own supreme consciousness, bringing total peace to the universe. This illustrates that the Guru is the ultimate sanctuary, absorbing the disciple's toxic mental fires and transforming them into bliss.
