Kapila Homa — Day 14 (2 Aug)
The fire of the founding sage Maharshi Kapila — avatar of Maha Vishnu and originator of Sankhya — kindling the Jnana-fire of discriminative wisdom and purifying ancestral karma across generations.
Significance
The Kapila Homa is offered in honour and invocation of Maharshi Kapila — the divine sage, son of Brahma, and avatar of Maha Vishnu — who is the founder of the Sankhya system, the originator of the Mahanirvani Akhada, and the cosmic progenitor of liberation through discriminative knowledge. The Kapila Homa invokes the highest Jnana-fire: the purifying wisdom that distinguishes the eternal Self from the transient world, burning away all accumulated karma and illuminating the path of liberation. It is also traditionally offered for the purification of ancestral karma, as it was by King Bhagiratha's penance that Kapila Muni's fire was pacified and the Ganga descended to Earth to liberate his ancestors.
The perfect alignment of the Kapila Homa with the Kapilaranya Kshetram is self-evident: the kingdom bears Kapila Muni's name, and the homa invokes his direct blessing into the sacred fire on the day that honours the kingdom he sanctified. Devotees who offer the Kapila Homa receive purification of ancestral karma across generations, liberation of lineage burdens, and the kindling of Jnana-fire — the discriminative wisdom that leads directly to Paramashiva.
The Ritual
The priests invoke Maharshi Kapila within the consecrated Agni Kunda and chant his mantras, offering oblations into the Jnana-fire. The purifying wisdom-fire of Kapila is kindled to burn away accumulated karma and to purify ancestral karma across generations, mirroring the cosmic descent of the Ganga that liberated the ancestors of King Bhagiratha.
