Shodashi Homa (with Dhvajarohanam) — Day 1 (20 Jul)

Significance

Shodashi, meaning "the Sixteen," is the third Mahavidya — one of the ten cosmic forms of Parashakti — representing the fullness of consciousness at the age of sixteen, eternally youthful and supremely radiant. She is also known as Tripura Sundari, the most beautiful being in the three worlds. The Shodashi Homa is offered to invoke Her complete grace across all sixteen phases of manifest reality, corresponding to the sixteen kalas (phases of the moon), the sixteen Sanskrit vowels, and the sixteen aspects of the jiva (individual soul) on its journey toward oneness with Paramashiva.

The Shodashi Homa performed on the inauguration day of the Brahmotsavam, in alignment with the Thondaimandala kingdom — the land where Devi Parashakti Herself attained oneness with Paramashiva under the mango tree — carries extraordinary resonance. Devotees who participate in this homa receive the blessings of completeness: the full sixteen-fold expansion of their inner consciousness, initiated by Devi's grace through the living lineage of THE SPH.

The Ritual

The day opens with the Dhvajarohanam, the ceremonial raising of the Dwaja Stambha (sacred flag post) that inaugurates a brahmotsavam. It is the cosmic announcement — declared across all fourteen Lokas — that Paramashiva's great festival has begun. The Dhvaja bearing the Nandi or the deity's symbol is hoisted to the Agamic sound of Vedic chants, Nadahaswaram, and Panchamukha Vadyam, extending the divine invitation to all gods, celestials, and beings across all dimensions to descend and participate. The Dhvajarohanam holds the cosmic cognition that everything begins under the sovereignty of Paramashiva — the raising of His flag declares that the king of the cosmos is present, His authority reigning over all space, all time, and all consciousness.

Following the flag-raising, the priests invoke Devi Shodashi within the consecrated Agni Kunda and offer the Shodashi Homa, pouring oblations into the fire while the sacred mantras of Tripura Sundari are chanted, drawing down Her full sixteen-fold grace upon the inaugurated festival.
