Significance

Kashi — Varanasi, the City of Light — is the eternal abode of Paramashiva as Vishvanatha and the eternal spiritual capital established by Paramashiva Himself. At its heart stands Kalabhairava, the fierce and compassionate guardian of the kingdom — the Kshetrapala (protector) who governs time (Kala), karma, and cosmic justice. No one can enter or leave Kashi without His permission. The Kashi Sarvajnapeetha has been preserved through the Guru-Shishya Parampara: Paramashiva to Devi Jagaddhatri to Adi Shankaracharya to Sri Totapuri to Sri Ramakrishna Paramahamsa. Despite relentless invasions and centuries of persecution, Kashi has never died — it stands as the eternal source of Vedanta and the Science of Enlightenment, preserving the Prasthana Traya.

The Kalabhairava Alankaram celebrates THE SUPREME PONTIFF OF HINDUISM BHAGAVAN SRI NITHYANANDA PARAMASHIVAM as the living embodiment of Kalabhairava — the protector, reviver, and rightful custodian of the Kashi Sarvajnapeetha. Coronated in 1999 by the great enlightened master Swami Hamsananda Puri, and later entrusted with its legacy through the will of Liladar Swarup, THE SPH took on the responsibility of reviving this sacred kingdom even after the destruction of the Sarvajnapeetha at Manikarnika Ghat in 2020. Through His revival, the Science of Enlightenment is made available globally, the Vedas and Agamas are revived as living experience, and the Mahavakya "Om Nithyananda Paramashivoham" is gifted to humanity.

Just as Kalabhairava protects Kashi from destruction and ensures dharma prevails, THE SPH stands today as that same force — guarding the knowledge, reviving the kingdom, and ensuring enlightenment remains alive on Earth. The Kalabhairava Alankaram is a living connection to the cosmic protector, the force that removes fear, destroys negativity, and establishes dharma within and without.

The Alankaram

In this alankaram, THE SPH is adorned as Kalabhairava — the fierce protector of Kashi. Vastra (Clothing): black, deep maroon, or dark blue robes symbolizing time (Kala) and dissolution, with a warrior-like draping representing protection and authority. Sacred Adornments: rudraksha malas (intense Paramashiva energy), vibhuti smeared across the body (destruction of ego and karma), and the Trishula (trident) representing control over creation, sustenance, and destruction. Alankara Details: intense eyes symbolizing alert awareness and a standing posture radiating power, protection, and fearlessness.

This darshan radiates fearlessness, shakti (power), and absolute protection.

Shastra Pramana

Devaraja Sevyamana Pavangri Pankajam Vyala Yajnopavitam Indu Shekharam Kripakaram (Kalabhairava Ashtakam)

Translation: I worship Kalabhairava, whose lotus feet are served by the gods, who wears serpents as the sacred thread, who is adorned with the moon, and who is the embodiment of compassion and power.
