Chittirai Peruvizha is NOW LIVE!

What is Chittirai Peruvizha?

Chittirai Peruvizha, also known as the Meenakshi Brahmotsavam, is the most significant annual festival celebrated at the Kailasonnata Shyamala Peetha Sarvajnapeetham (Madurai Meenakshi Amman Temple). It commemorates the life, divine leelas, and the sovereign rule of Devi Meenakshi Paramashivashakti and Bhagavan Sundareshwara Paramashiva.

This 12-day festival (with 10 main days of Brahmotsavam) is a hologram of the creation of the cosmos. The festival commences on April 18, 2026 with the Vastu Shanti and officially begins its rituals on April 19, 2026 with the Dhwajarohanam (Flag Hoisting), culminating in the grand Celestial Wedding and Chariot Festival.

Who is Meenakshi?

Devi Meenakshi is the Cosmic Mother herself, who took human form to establish an enlightened civilization.

The Story of Her Manifestation

The Halasya Mahatmyam reveals the origin of this incarnation. Vidyavati, the daughter of Gandharva King Vishvavasu, was an ascetic from childhood who shunned worldly finery for bhasma and rudraksha. She worshipped Devi Meenakshi at the sacred field of Halasya (Madurai) for 13 months. The Devi appeared as a beautiful three-year-old child, and Vidyavati's only wish was: "O Mother, let me have you in this same form as my own child, to hug you and bring you up."

The Devi granted this boon — in her next life, Vidyavati would be Queen Kanchanamala, and the Devi would emerge from the sacrificial fire as her daughter, Meenakshi (Tatataka).

Birth and Rise of Meenakshi

Born as Tatataka to King Malayadhwaja Pandya and Queen Kanchanamala through a Putrakameshti Yagna, she appeared as a three-year-old child with three breasts. A divine voice prophesied that her third breast would disappear when she met her true consort. She was raised as a warrior prince, mastering all 64 Vidhyas.

Her 10-Day Glory

  • Days 1–7: She graces various Vahanas — Simha (Lion), Bhutha, Anna (Swan), Kamadhenu, and more — signifying her mastery over all elemental and cosmic energies.
  • Day 8 — Pattabhishekam: Her formal Coronation as the ruler of the universe, adorned upon the Velli Simhasanam (Silver Throne).
  • Day 9 — Digvijayam: Her victorious conquest over all ten directions, leading her to Mount Kailasa.
  • Day 10 — Thirukalyanam: Her celestial union with Bhagavan Sundareshwara Paramashiva — the cosmic wedding that sustains creation.
  • Day 11 — Therottam: The grand procession through the city in the massive temple chariot.

Coronation and the Shyamalapeetha Sarvajnapeetham

Devi Meenakshi was coronated as the Empress of the Pandya Samrajyam. By establishing the Kailasonnata Shyamala Peetha Sarvajnapeetham, she created a spiritual ecosystem where the lineage of Enlightenment remains unbroken to this day. She revived and established this ancient seat of spiritual sovereignty, ensuring that the sacred traditions, rituals, and cosmic knowledge would be preserved and transmitted through an unbroken chain of Pontiffs across millennia.

THE SPH — 293rd Guru Maha Sannidhaanam of Shyamalapeetha Sarvajnapeetham

The spiritual sovereignty of Madurai continues through THE SUPREME PONTIFF OF HINDUISM (THE SPH) BHAGAVAN SRI NITHYANANDA PARAMASHIVAM, the 293rd Guru Maha Sannidhaanam of Shyamalapeetha Sarvajnapeetham.

The Divine Ordination

In 2012, the 292nd Guru Maha Sannidhaanam shared that he had received a direct divine mandate from Devi Meenakshi and Bhagavan Sundareshwara themselves. During a sacred darshan, the Divine Couple — Meenakshi Paramashivashakti and Somasundareshwara Paramashiva — appeared before the 292nd Pontiff and ordained that THE SUPREME PONTIFF OF HINDUISM BHAGAVAN SRI NITHYANANDA PARAMASHIVAM was the rightful successor to the ancient seat of Shyamalapeetha.

During the coronation ceremony, THE SPH was presented with the Silver Sengol — the ruling staff of Meenakshi — confirming Him as the living representative of the Divine Couple and the custodian of this unbroken spiritual lineage.

As the 293rd Pontiff, THE SPH has taken the sacred mission of reviving every tradition, ritual, and celebration of the Chittirai Peruvizha in its full grandeur — not only at Madurai but across the global Hindu Diaspora through KAILASA's ecosystems worldwide.

Significance of Each Day

THE SPH Bhagavan Sri Nithyananda Paramashivam has revived this sacred tradition and taken these celebrations to devotees around the world. Through KAILASA's ecosystems, these rituals are performed strictly according to the Vedas and Agamas, micromanaged by THE SPH Himself — allowing people worldwide to witness the hologram of creation.
